My Approach

There comes a time in everyone’s life where what you had always done simply isn’t working anymore, but you are unsure of how to change. It is one of the most challenging parts of the human experience, leaving many at a loss. That is where your therapist comes in. Whether you have been in and out of therapy your whole life, or entering for the first time, I will make the process of starting a new feel safe and comfortable.

Together, we'll embark on a journey of self-exploration, delving into the underlying factors shaping your current challenges. Through thoughtful inquiry and reflection, we'll uncover insights from your past experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of your personal narrative and the forces driving your present circumstances.

Throughout our sessions, my role is to offer a compassionate and nonjudgmental space where you can freely explore your thoughts, feelings, and aspirations. By fostering an environment devoid of shame or self-criticism, we create the conditions necessary for authentic self-expression and growth.

It's important to recognize that therapy is a process, not a quick fix. While the journey may present its share of challenges, the commitment you make to your own well-being is an investment with profound and lasting rewards. Together, we'll work collaboratively to cultivate resilience, self-awareness, and the skills needed to navigate life's transitions with confidence and grace.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in humanistic principles, viewing you as a holistic and multifaceted individual. By honoring the interconnectedness of your thoughts, emotions, and experiences, we'll explore the full spectrum of your inner world, uncovering strengths and resources that empower you to realize your fullest potential.

Ultimately, my aim is to provide you with the tools and support you need to chart a course toward greater fulfillment and well-being. Your journey is unique, and I'm here to walk alongside you, offering insight, encouragement, and unwavering support as you embark on this transformative process of self-discovery and growth.

Addiction

As a trained therapist in the field of addiction and co-occurring disorders, I've found one thing to be true: most people are affected by addiction in one way or another. I know what you're thinking, "Barbara, my family doesn't have an alcohol or drug problem." That may be true, however, think of addiction as more of an addictive process, rather than a need to consume a substance (although this counts, too). Think of someone who when they are sad, goes on a spending spree, binge eats, gambles, overconsumes social media. Or, perhaps they have a history of codependency and trauma through which they exhibit compulsive sexual behaviors, or a need to be loved as if their life depended on it, and can't find themselves a healthy relationship. All of these situations fall under the umbrella term of addiction. Any addictive process affects every facet of a person's life. My work with addiction spans across the entire spectrum, from those who consume drugs and alcohol, to eating disorders, to sex and love addicts. If you're unsure if this is you, or know with certainty, my work as your therapist will be meeting you where you are at in the change process.

Relationships

Navigating relationships can be one of the most challenging aspects of life for many people. Whether it's the struggle to find a compatible partner, feeling stuck in a pattern of dating the wrong people, or experiencing difficulties within a long-term relationship, these issues can deeply impact one's emotional well-being.Through guided exploration, we will uncover the root causes of your relationship struggles, whether they stem from past experiences, unresolved emotional wounds, or deeply ingrained beliefs about love and intimacy. By gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your relational patterns, you’ll be better equipped to make conscious choices and break free from destructive cycles. If in a relationship, you’ll learn how to express your needs and desires assertively, listen empathically to your partner's perspective, and navigate conflict constructively. By learning to communicate more effectively, you will foster greater intimacy, trust, and mutual respect within your relationships.

Relationship issues also come in the form of your relationship with yourself. Therapy can help you cultivate a stronger sense of self-worth and identity, which forms the foundation for healthy relationships. Many people struggle with issues such as low self-esteem, codependency, or fear of abandonment, which can sabotage their ability to form and maintain fulfilling connections. Through therapeutic interventions such as cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, and self-compassion exercises, you will develop a more resilient sense of self and learn to establish boundaries that protect your emotional well-being.

Life Transitions

Whether it's starting a new job, moving to a new city, entering or leaving a relationship, or becoming a parent, major life changes can evoke a wide range of emotions and challenges such as grief, fear and anxiety of the unknown, excitement about new opportunities, and self-doubt. As your therapist, I will help you navigate the full spectrum of emotions that accompany these major life changes and help you embrace change as an opportunity for personal transformation and empowerment, rather than a source of fear or uncertainty

"Barbara has been an absolute life changer for me. She is calm, easy to talk to, thoughtful and exceptionally helpful with strategies. She has helped me set boundaries and has supported me through some extremely challenging times. I am so grateful I found her."
